Adkins was raised by a young single mother in various working-class areas of London. As a young girl she was fond of singing contemporary pop music and learned how to play the guitar and the clarinet. It wasn't until she was in her teens when she was introduced to Etta James, a blues and rhythm singer, as well as other performers from the 20th century's mid-century, when she began to think about a career in the field of music. She was attending a secondary school for the visual and performing arts, which was funded by the government. A friend of mine posted songs Adkins composed on Myspace. Following her graduation her music caught the attention of record label. She signed a contract in the year 2006 with XL Recordings.
